We all know someone’s passing can be an extremely emotional time, and different people have different ways of coping.

Granny’s suggestions are personal, which I hope you find helpful.

Try to ensure that you say your last goodbyes or your fond farewells, as this can prove to be a consoling memory in the weeks after loss.

Don’t forget to tell the patient just how much they were loved in their lifetime.

Often the grieving process can lead to extreme emotions which may take time to heal, everyone has different mechanisms in place to cope with loss.

Dementia diagnosis

What to think about

To help with what you need to do at this very sad time, Granny has made a small checklist of things that need to be addressed.

  • You will need to obtain a death certificate from the hospital or from the doctor to enable you to register the death
  • You need at least 3 forms of identity. This could be NHS card, Birth certificate, council tax bill, passport or driving licence, civil partnership certificate and organ donation card if one is in place and you will need proof of address.
  • Is there a funeral plan in place? If not you must arrange a visit to the undertaker’s.
  • You can face a fine if you don’t register the death within 5 days
  • Inform, Lawyers, Banks, Building Societies, Council Tax Office, Social Services, Utility Companies if the property will not be occupied after a person’s passing, insurance companies for the property or any vehicle which may be accredited to the diseased, friends + ex-workmates and family.
  • Don’t forget a Power of Attorney loses its validity on death and transfers to the executers.
